James Suckling: 100 Points
It’s hard to get past the overwhelming, enveloping nose that is like a whole garden of summer flowers and berries, a slew of delicate, spicy nuances completing the tapestry of aromas. Enormously concentrated and compact, but every bit as refined and precise on the full-bodied palate. Giant depth at the almost endless finish. Still extremely young, this has decades of aging potential. More than 50% whole bunch. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

From two plots on the south-facing part with the oldest vines planted in 1975, the 2022 Alsace Grand Cru Hengst Pinot Noir Grand H displays a dark cherry color and opens with a deep, intense and toasty yet also pure and iodine-inflected bouquet of ripe and concentrated but elegant and fresh dark fruits. Generous and elegant on the palate, with a silky but also lush texture and very fine tannins, this is a full-bodied, even powerful, substantial, saline and very intense Pinot with a long and complex finish yet also remarkable finesse. This is a great Hengst, formerly known as Grand H. It was picked on August 26 and bottled in with 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
