(90-92 points) A somber and restrained nose requires considerable swirling to coax the pretty aromas of lavender, red cherry, spice and violet. There is a taut muscularity to the mineral-inflected larger-scaled flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the more complex and longer finale.

(90-92 points) Picked on August 29, earlier than the domaine’s other reds, the 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet of red currant, raspberry and briar, all well defined and focused. The palate is balanced with a fine saline core. Quite robust and structured for a Volnay, but with satisfying precision and grip toward the finish. It should give at least a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure. -- Neal Martin
