From silty and clayey chalk soils, the 2019 Saumur Esprit de Chenin opens with a beautifully pure, intense and chalky, almost Champagne-like bouquet of white and yellow fruits and flinty and yeasty notes. Low yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare from 5,000-7,000 vines and one year of sur lie aging in stainless steel make this an impressive, lean, refined and elegant as well as intense, chalky and salty Chenin that would still be great even with bubbles, which immediately come to my mind due to the chalkiness of this gorgeous wine. Its forerunner 2018 was bottled with 15% natural alcohol, but this 2019 should have less, at least it tastes so pure, fresh, lifted and crunchy mineral and finishes with a fascinating chalky, iodine, refined and highly stimulating aftertaste yet no bitters or any signs of massiveness. This is a fantastic Chenin with very fine chalky tannins! Take a big glass to enjoy it with everything that comes from the sea. By the way, if this is of any interest: The wine remained fascinating, precise and chalky over a period of 14 days, so there shouldn't be any doubts about the quality and the aging capacity.
