From octogenarian Grenache vines in Marne chalk-dominated soil and a northerly exposure, the Gaubys’ 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages La Roque leads with fascinating, strikingly marine – saline, briny and alkaline – aromatics along with scents of saffron, coriander seed, and behind that strawberry, rhubarb, and just-ripe black raspberry that anticipate the bright, juicy fruit fundament on a firm palate. Mingled with this intense fruit is an oyster liquor-like briny, nutty, seaweed-like element that leads into a fantastically energetic, vibratory finish, mouthwatering and dazzlingly dynamic in its interaction of mineral, herbal and fruit elements. This amazing bottling is likely to remain so through at least 2025.
