Château Latour à Pomerol is known for producing generous, concentrated wines that strike a perfect balance between elegance and power.
The vineyard is characterised by the diversity of its soils, which brings complexity and harmony to the wine: gravel and clay for a marvellous parcel next to the church of Pomerol; loam surrounding the château.
I loved the 2022 Château Latour A Pomerol. This deep ruby/purple-hued beauty is all Merlot, harvested from the 1st to the 8th of September, that's pulled from eight hectares of deep gravelly and clay soils. Red and black fruits, truffly earth, spicy oak, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all shine here, and it's concentrated and medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This brilliant Pomerol is hard to resist today, yet I suspect it will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity. It's the finest vintage from this château I've tasted.
Falstaff
Deep dark ruby garnet colour with opaque core and purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Fine herbal savouriness, somewhat restrained bouquet, dark forest berries and black cherries in the background, delicate notes of precious wood. Juicy, elegant, fine fruitiness, ripe, silky tannins, elegant and persistent, mineral on the finish, great ageing potential, a wonderfully balanced food wine.
A ripe and opulent Latour a Pomerol, aromas of currants and raspberry puree following through to a medium body. This has a firm and silky palate from fine tannins that frame the luscious fruit nicely. Juicy finish. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Drink after 2028
