Unwinding in the glass with aromas of peonies, orange rind, wild berries, subtle spices, licorice and forest floor, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a textural attack that segues into a supple, fleshy mid-palate that's impressively rich and concentrated for the vintage. 90-92

A beautifully layered if more subdued notes grudgingly gives up its earthy dark berry fruit, forest floor and violet scents. The sleek and equally attractively textured medium-bodied flavors possess a relatively refined mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins shaping the youthfully austere, balanced and lingering finish. This will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my range but it's quite promising. 90-92
