La Gauloise Liqueur Bicentenaire - Verte (750ml)

Price: $49.00

Producer La Gauloise Liqueur Bicentenaire
Style Chartreuse
Size 750ml

Green Chartreuse

Gauloise is a herbal liqueur and brandy , originating from Corrèze in central France. The recipe would have been rediscovered by Edouard Requier, distiller and liquorist in Périgueux, in 1783 in a grimoire. It is now produced by La Distillerie du Center in Limoges.

Master liqueur maker Pierre Nouhaud uses angelica, St. John's wort, saffron, cardamom, genepi and other secret ingredients, distilled twice over a wood fire.

The luminous green herbal elixir La Gauloise Verte is made at the Distillerie du Center in Limoges

The recipe is old and shrouded in mystery. After a long time lost in the mists of oblivion, it appeared in a book of magical formulas and recipes for talismans and potions, and the liqueur was resurrected thanks to the alchemist Edouard Requier.

In terms of taste, the liqueur is reminiscent of green Chartreuse, just a little softer and less strong on the alcohol (48%).

Colour: Electric green.
Aroma: A spicy, herbal scent of dried flowers, a hint of mint, vanilla, fennel and wormwood.
Tasting notes: Great sweetness with warm, herbal notes. The taste is very harmonious without anything particularly standing out. The aftertaste is long and soft.

Legend has it that this liqueur was already a popular elixir when France was part of Gaul, hence the name La Gauloise. In fact, the liqueur is said to have been the favorite drink of Roman legionnaires, but unfortunately the recipe was lost until the spiritually gifted alchemist Edouard Requier came across the recipe in 1783 in an old book of spells. He tried the recipe and La Gauloise was reborn. The recipe is – of course – secret, but we do know that it is distilled over an open fire with, among other things, quark, saffron, cardamom and St. John’s wort, added brandy and flavored with sugar.
